Michigan State University Extension - Grand Traverse County - Extension Educator
Michigan State University Extension through its Greening Michigan Institute is teaching standard financial and home ownership principles to people throughout Michigan. With education and coaching, people have been making better financial decisions resulting in better outcomes. Just as the economic melt-down in the state was triggered by personal financial decisions around spending, credit and mortgages, better individual decision-making will be necessary for a sustained economic recovery in Michigan.
The eight session MSUE Financial Fitness program covers:
- Determining goals;
- Writing a budget;
- Reducing debt; and
- Developing a financial plan with insurance, savings and investments.
The three session MSUE Home Ownership program covers:
- Choosing a real estate agent, lender, home inspector and lawyer;
- Shopping for the right mortgage; and
- Understanding closing documents.
Sessions focus on behavior change achieved through adult learning precepts of interactive learning. Participants receive a certificate for completing the series and assigned homework. Research-based evaluations developed by the National Endowment of Financial Education are administered before and after each series.
MSUE wants Michigan residents to be financially stable and secure in their homes. Understanding how money works and applying that knowledge will result in financial stability leading to prosperity.
