The Managing in Tough Times resource directory, MiTTNet, officially launched July 30, 2009. It is fully searchable and nearly 900 resources can be found in individual and family, farm and ranch, community, and youth topic areas.  A national web conference to announce MiTTNet, to demonstrate the site and highlight its contents can be viewed at: http://connect.extension.iastate.edu/p78987985/

The Extension Creed and Its Implications for Professional Development

Advanced Degrees for MSUE Staff Members
Since 2007 all candidates for promotion within the MSU Extension academic system must have a minimum of an earned master’s degree. This is also the standard for new staff members. To assist those who wish to pursue further education, the MSU Extension professional development unit makes available information on programs in which personnel have participated. Staff members who have recently completed or are pursuing degrees are asked to complete the online Master’s Degree Information Form. The resulting information is made available to MSUE members considering graduate study. To learn more about a particular degree, click on the program title. In most cases, that will also reveal the staff member who provided the information and who can be contacted for more.
While this is intended to be useful for MSU Extension members, it is neither a comprehensive list of available and/or appropriate programs, nor will all programs listed here be appropriate for all staff. It is not a substitute for thorough research, consultation with supervisors and peers, and a discussion with faculty members at institutions under consideration.  The MSUE professional development unit staff is also available to help think through and analyze graduate study opportunities. Contact them at profdev@anr.msu.edu.

There is limited tuition assistance available from the MSU Extension Director's office for those pursuing Master's Degrees.

The Great Plains Interactive Distance Learning Alliance is a multi-state alliance offering fully online graduate programs in community development, dietetics, family and consumer sciences education, family financial planning, food safety and defense, gerontology, merchandising and youth development. Michigan State University is one of the partners in this alliance. The professional development staff can help you learn more about it.

Resources For New Staff

  Professional Development - Resources page
Welcome to MSU Extension!

If you've not yet registered for Module 1 of New Staff OnBoarding (NSO), please do so. Click on "Workshops & Registration" and follow the instructions. MSU Extension offers NSO in three modules. The modules 1 and 2 are each two days; module 3 is one day. All are offered twice per year, about six months apart. Staff members should register for the first module 1 available upon their hire; module 2 six months later; and module 3 six months following module 2.

Before attending NSO, please view this 45 minute introductory video featuring MSUE Director Dr. Tom Coon.

Here is the Typical agenda from Module 1 NSO. It includes links to all of the resources used by the presenters, so is a great place to visit to brush up your memory.

This typical agenda for Module 2 NSO also includes links to training resources.

Module 3 of NSO focuses on evaluation and includes these resources: Why Evaluate? Planning and Design of Program Evaluation; Evaluation Planning Worksheet; Developing Evaluation Instruments; and Data Collection and Analysis.
