Core Competencies in MSU Extension

Core competencies are basic sets of knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors required to be an exemplary Extension professional. They are the foundation for helping people learn and change; for working collaboratively with diverse people in community settings; for marketing and communicating effectively about our work; for measuring the impacts of our programs; and for employing technology to enhance everything we do. Core competencies are those basic attributes needed by all educators, which, when combined with technical knowledge and skills, allow staff to be effective in addressing educational issues. Today, almost every state’s Extension system has its own core competency initiative for staff development.

MSU has ten core competencies.  Each is presented with a short description, a list of sub-competencies and indicators of competency, a list of learning activities for developing the competency, and a list of key resources. All of the books or articles listed under key resources are available on the MSUE portal, or for checkout from the professional development library. A complete list of the core competencies is available here, or click on the individual competencies below.
