Nursery & Greenhouse Programs

The commercial greenhouse and nursery industries are a significant GREEN industry in Ottawa County.  Over 6,300 acres of nursery stock valued at over 60 million dollars are grown in the county.  Greenhouse square footage is estimated at over 6.1 million square feet and valued at over 62 million dollars.  MSU District Horticulture and Marketing Agent Thomas Dudek provides educational programs, information and materials to these industries. Educational programs include the West Michigan Summer Nursery Tour, West Michigan Winter Nursery Updates, greenhouse meetings on timely topics and newsletters sent to greenhouse and nursery owners and or growers. Additional links to resources at Michigan State University and other Land Grant Universities are listed as well. Program announcements as well as timely documents and handouts from programs will be posted here. For educational information and Internet links for the commercial greenhouse and nursery industry see information listed on this page. MSU Integrated Pest Management - Resources for integrated pest management developed by MSU faculty and available on this site…including bulletins, scouting guides, etc.
 
Agricultural Employers Checklist - A handy site that contains a list of all the steps you need to consider when hiring labor for your operation. Dr. Vera Bitsch at MSU has this as part off her web page on Human Resources Management.
 
MSU Pesticide Education Web Pages - A site that has the Pesticide applicator training manuals, details about applicator certification and the calendar of meetings and exam sites for applicator certification.

MSU Greenhouse CAT Alert - The only place where you can find the latest pest and cultural information based on research from MSU staff that is published during the greenhouse growing season.
 
Floriculture College of Knowledge/Business College of Knowledge - The site to find out where and when the award winning COK classes are available for greenhouse growers. Also the new Business COK classes for greenhouse and nursery clients are listed. Registration materials are posted.
 
Obtain information about the MSU Annual Trials including searchable data base to see each year’s entries. Includes notes and photos. Summaries of best performing plants, including “Spartan Selects”.
 
Floriculture AOE Team –MSU – The link to the campus and field staff who serve the floriculture industry of Michigan. It contains links to educational meetings, the annual Michigan Greenhouse Expo, College of knowledge and energy related documents of interest to greenhouse growers.

Perry’s Perennial Pages - Dr. Leonard Perry University of Vermont’s all inclusive website on perennials. The site includes research results, photos, publications for growers and your consumer clientele.
 
RNGR Page - The reforestation, nursery, genetics resource pages that lists the Forest Nursery Manual, Tree Planters Notes, and other documents of interest to nursery seedling growers.
 
Northeast Greenhouse IPM Notes - Cornell and Rutgers University team up to provide a newsletter on greenhouse related pests and control strategies.
 
Weed Management in Nursery Crops - The web pages for Dr. James Atland at Oregon State University. It contains useful research results, photos and publications on weed control in nurseries.

Emerald Ash Borer Issues
Alternative Trees to Replace Ash - A website that lists shade trees that could replace ash in the landscape. Publication developed by MSU faculty in response to the Emerald Ash Borer.
 
Emerald Ash Borer Information - The official MSU web site that contains educational information based on research that helps clients identify and develop control measures for this pest. Many publications and tools for dealing with EAB are listed.

Greenhouse Energy MSU - A site that pulls together educational information on the current energy situation facing greenhouse growers.
 
Michigan Biomass Energy - Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Growth’s website for biomass energy information including grant information, deadlines and frequently asked questions about biomass fuels.
 
Michigan Wind Energy - The state of Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Growth’ site for educational information on wind power including windmills, wind maps for the state and publications.

On August 4, 2009 at the MSU Garden Plant Showcase, Chris Noffsinger, Trials Manager gave a presentation on the annuals that were the top performers at the MSU Trial Gardens.  Check out this link to see photos of 25 annuals that should be considered by Michigan greenhouse growers based on flower performance, lack of pest problems and overall qualities from our 2009 Trial.
 
MAEAP/Greenhouse*A*Syst
This is a confidential, voluntary and non-regulatory environmental assurance program.  It will allow participants to chart a path towards environmental assurance for their greenhouse system.  These documents describe the program and provide the tool used to conduct the assessment.

Greenhouse and nursery businesses use significant quantities of plastics in the form of poly film, pots, flats plug trays, etc.  This article is helpful to operators that wish to start a plastics recycling program.

A Powerpoint presentation developed by Dr. Thomas Fernandez, Department of Horticulture at MSU. This program was presented at the 2003 Over-wintering of Nursery stock meeting held in Grand Haven.

Greenhouse Insect Management (Revised December 21, 2007)
The latest version of Dr. David Smitley’s insecticide recommendations for floriculture crops. It contains insecticides recommended for all the major greenhouse insects that occur in Michigan.
 
An English/Spanish Video or DVD developed by MSU Extension Greenhouse Agents that is a valuable training tool for the greenhouse employees. It focuses on training methods for your workforce to help them understand the ways they can prevent the spread of greenhouse plant diseases.
 

This document gives retailers important information on plant packaging regulations.
