To the West Michigan vegetable and fruit community:
Growers and packers of fresh produce are encouraged to attend a remote listening session on the food safety rules FDA has proposed under the Food Safety and Modernization Act. The session will be held at the Oceana County Extension office at 210 Johnson St., Hart, MI on April 24, 2013 from 8:15-12:00. This is one of only 5 listening sessions occurring nationally, and will give participants a chance to voice their opinion on the proposed rules. Comments will be collated and sent to MSU Extension Educator Phil Tocco who will be on site at the meeting in Lansing, MI, and will communicate comments to FDA staff. The period for feedback on the FDA rules will be over May 16, 2013, so voice your opinion now while there is still a chance for change. Email Ben Werling (werlingb@anr.msu.edu) or call the Hart Extension office at 231-873-2129 to reserve your seat by April 15.
The 2013 Oceana County Asparagus Day is scheduled for Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the St. Joseph (Weare) Hall just north and east of Hart. Registration and viewing of exhibits begins at 8:30 a.m. and the educational program will begin at 9:00 a.m. with lunch and viewing of exhibits from noon-1:00 p.m. Please see the complete agenda and registration form below.

The Oceana County MSU Extension Offices maintains a code-a-phone line. Written copiesare available by email. To sign-up for the email version you just need to call the Oceana MSU Extension Office at 231-873-2129 and supply us with your email address.
The Vegetable/Christmas tree Code-a-phone is maintained year around, but may be updated only monthly during the fall and winter months. During the non-growing season months it is used to announce upcoming programs and is also updated if we have program cancellations due to weather. This code-a-phone is updated 2-3 times per week during the growing season and covers pest problems in asparagus, carrots, vine crops, snap beans, sweet corn and Christmas trees, as well as announcing programs of interest to growers of those crops. This Code-a-phone is oriented toward commercial growers, not homeowners or gardeners. Weather details including Degree Day Base 50 totals, precipitation total and near term National Weather Service Forecasts are also included. The telephone number for the Vegetable/Christmas code-a-phone is 231-873-2528.
For fruit updates you can call 616-451-8065 which is the fruit code-a-phone number.
