MSU Extension for the 21st century will move Michigan forward
MSU Extension has conducted a vigorous internal discussion focused on resculpting itself into a 21st-century organization, while continuing its dedication to furthering the quality of life and prosperity of Michigan citizens. The program now will carry that conversation to its external stakeholders, starting with partners in state government.
“The Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station and Michigan State University Cooperative Extension have historically provided relevant, responsive services that were tailored to our rural communities," said Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm. "As Michigan moves from rust to green, these programs will be focused on enhancing our local communities’ efforts to collaborate and innovate in the new clean energy economy. I support continued funding for this restructuring, with its emphasis on growing Michigan's new green economy.” Read the entire announcement on the MSU News site.

The Oceana County MSU Extension Offices maintains two code-a-phones. Written copies of both code-a-phones are available by email. To sign-up for the email version you just need to call the Oceana MSU Extension Office at 231-873-2129 and supply us with your email address.
The Vegetable/Christmas tree Code-a-phone is maintained year around, but may be updated only monthly during the fall and winter months. During the non-growing season months it is used to announce upcoming programs and is also updated if we have program cancellations due to weather. This code-a-phone is updated 2-3 times per week during the growing season and covers pest problems in asparagus, carrots, vine crops, snap beans, sweet corn and Christmas trees, as well as announcing programs of interest to growers of those crops. This Code-a-phone is oriented toward commercial growers, not homeowners or gardeners. Weather details including Degree Day Base 50 totals, precipitation total and near term National Weather Service Forecasts are also included. The telephone number for the Vegetable/Christmas code-a-phone is 231-873-2528.
The Fruit Code-a-phone is maintained only during the growing season. This code-a-phone covers pests of cherry, apples and peaches in Oceana, Mason and Manistee Counties and announces programs for growers of those crops. It is updated twice per week during the growing season. The number is 888-345-0515 and is toll-free in the United States.
