Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)

Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) helps families with low income acquire the knowledge and skills needed to improve their diet and health. Program instructors live in the communities, in which they work, and teach practical skills in budgeting, healthful food choices and food safety, using research-based curricula. They adapt activities to match the skills and interests of participants.

EFNEP works in partnership with public health and WIC, local schools, food stamp offices and emergency food services to provide education to families, without duplicating efforts.

For more information on the EFNEP program please contact 248-858-0897 or e-mail.

Family Nutrition Program (FNP) is a food and nutrition education program that targets the following audiences in Oakland County:

  • Senior citizens that receive or are food stamp eligible, this program helps the at-risk senior citizen stretch their food dollar so they can buy more for less. Paraprofessional educators help people maximize their resources and provide information to better and more safely feed themselves and their family. Specific lessons are provided to accommodate a senior citizen lifestyle and health concerns.
  • FNP program for at risk youth 5-18 years of age whose families receive or are food stamp eligible focuses on building lifelong learning skills that help youth develop and grow into healthy individuals. The youth program is designed to help children make informed choices related to food safety, quality and composition of food with hands-on lessons and experiments. Lessons are taught at after-school programs, community centers, recreation centers, etc.
  • Breastfeeding Mentor Program is open to mothers that receive or are food stamp eligible and WIC (Womens, Infant and Children) eligible. The purpose is to ensure that mothers give birth to health babies and provide their babies a healthy start by breastfeeding.
