Breast Feeding Initiative

What is the Mother-To-Mother  Peer Counselor Program?

Mothers with breastfeeding experience are hired from the community by the local Extension and WIC agency to serve as peer counselors. Peer counselors are trained to provide WIC and Food Stamp eligible women with breastfeeding information, encouragement, and support. They are available to see mothers in person, by telephone, in the home, the hospital, or the WIC clinic.

The Breastfeeding Initiative Mother-to Mother program goals are to:

  • Increase breastfeeding initiation and duration rates among low income WIC women.
  • Provide breastfeeding encouragement and support to women throughout the infant’s first year of life.
  • Enhance state and local WIC/MSU Extension collaboration to expand service delivery and education for mothers and babies.

A "Wall of Fame" has been put up in the Muskegon County WIC office for the purpose of recognizing women who have reached the breastfeeding milestone of six months or one year.
