Adult to Youth Mentoring in Montmorency County

Hello, my name is Barb Steele. I'm the Mentoring Coordinator for Montmorency County.

This mentoring program is designed to provide services to the youth in our communities. The process of matching adult mentors with school aged youth is the most important aspect of the program. Mentors are required to spend 1-2 hours per week with the youth they are matched wtih and they are to commit themselves to the program for at least 1 year.

What is a Mentor?

  •  A mentor acts as a Friend, Positive Role Model, Advocate, Coach and a link to the community.

Why do youth need Mentors?

The youth in our communities need mentors because of many factors, including: peer pressure, child abuse and neglect, depression and suicide, substance abuse, school safety and violence, career exploration and social management.

Qualifications to become a Mentor:

  • An ability to listen actively
  • Empathy Skills
  • Have respect for young people
  • Flexibility and Openess
  • See solutions and opportunities for youth
  • Be 21 years of age or older

Mentor duties could include:

  • Providing academic support and tutoring
  • Providing career exploration and job search
  • Providing emotional support
