Extension Council Purpose

The purpose of the Mecosta County Extension Council is to assist staff in identifying critical issues, programming needs and strategies to better serve all county residents.

Programming Priorities

2006 - 2007 Extension Programming Priorities

Water Quality

  • Protect groundwater resources through Groundwater Stewardship Grant goals
  • Be involved with Muskegon River Watershed Assembly
  • Work with farmers on Michigan Agricultural Environmental Assurance Compliance
  • Help Producers with irrigation regulations

Agriculture

  • Work with producers to achieve economic success
  • Promote on - farm environmental stewardship
  • Educate producers and public on the use of bio-fuels
  • Work with farmers on Progressive Planning

Land Use

  • Provide educational leadership with Better Designs for Development Program
  • Woodlot owner education

Family and Consumer Issues

  • Earned Income Tax Credit education
  • Nutrition and physical fitness education with limited income families
  • Educational outreach to day care providers (Better Kid Care series)
  • Resources for money management
  • Form a community childrens health taskforce
  • Public education of childhood health issues relating to nutrition
  • Work with Team Nutrition schools
  • Promote healthy lifestyles across the county

4-H

  • Work with 4-H Council and other advisory committees to identify needs and opportunities for 4-H club and program development
  • Communication development - increase awareness of 4-H activities and opportunities to existing members and within the community
  • Financial accountability - working with clubs to comply with  MSUE 4-H policy
  • VISTA Americorp Teen Action through Leadership, Citizenship & Community Service Project

Economic and Community Development

  • Assist public in understanding the use of alternative energy options
  • Help communities develop long range planning goals
  • Diversity training for businesses and schools on Amish culture
