MSU Extension has a rich history of success in meeting the educational needs of a clientele. The North Region has the distinction of providing the state's first county-based extension agent, Harvey G. Smith to Alpena County in 1912. Yet the organization does not rely on that history to bring future successes. The vision for the future of MSU Extension in the North Region is to provide base programming that is demanded by our citizens while also engaging in new educational partnerships that respond to changing clientele priorities.
Education in Extension's three core program areas of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Children, Youth and Families, and Community and Economic Development are provided throughout the Region by our county-based academic staff. Finally, a network of campus based and field based specialists are available throughout the state to help respond to critical issues.
We work in the twenty-one northern most counties of the lower peninsula in Michigan in partnership with county government, as well as tribal communities. Our staff is housed in 21 county government centers or courthouses, two agricultural research stations, and the MSU North Region Administrative office.
Visit our county portal sites or our state site for more information on how we are providing the University's educational resources to the people of Michigan. This Regional portal site also provides updates and information on course work, programming, and resources issues important to the North Region.
