MSU Extension for the 21st century will move Michigan forward
MSU Extension has conducted a vigorous internal discussion focused on resculpting itself into a 21st-century organization, while continuing its dedication to furthering the quality of life and prosperity of Michigan citizens. The program now will carry that conversation to its external stakeholders, starting with partners in state government.
“The Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station and Michigan State University Cooperative Extension have historically provided relevant, responsive services that were tailored to our rural communities," said Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm. "As Michigan moves from rust to green, these programs will be focused on enhancing our local communities’ efforts to collaborate and innovate in the new clean energy economy. MSU Extension in Kent County is part of a state-wide information and education delivery network, applying university level, research-based knowledge to locally-identified critical issues. We respond to local needs through a unique partnership of County, State and Federal resources. Information is extended to Kent County residents through the MSU non-formal education system, which assists individuals, families and communities to make better decisions.

Soil Testing
Soil Testing Instructions:
The soil test includes determination of soil pH, available phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium levels as well as recommendations for lime and fertilizer.
1. Collect 2 cups of soil. A full sandwich baggie is approximately 2 cups. If soil is wet/damp, AIR dry before bringing in.
2. Sampling depths are as follows:
Field Soils - 8 inches
Garden Soils - 6 to 8 inches
Lawn - 3 inches below turf
3. You may take from a variety of locations and blend into one sample, or bring in several samples.
4. Samples are $10.00 for field crops, and $10.50 for homeowners, per sample. Payment is due at time of drop off. Prices are subject to change
5. Kent/MSU Extension Office can only accept cash or check. Register closes at 4:15 Monday thru Friday.
6. Your soil is boxed and mailed with appropriate form to MSU.
7. Michigan State University analyzes your soil and you receive the results directly through the mail.
8. Results take approximately 2-3 weeks.
