MSU Extension, in cooperation with the DNR, delivers the Michigan Firewise Communities Project and regularly compiles timely news articles, PSAs, and other educational resources for use by the public and media in an effort to spread the word about ‘firewise’ practices. The following ‘MSU Extension News’ articles on ‘firewise’ practices are available for reproduction by local media:
· Wildfire poses risk of loss to homes and communities – A migration of homeowners from urban areas to locations adjacent to or in close proximity to wildlands is increasing the risk of loss of homes from wildfires. Understanding how wildfires pose a threat to homes can help owners and communities reduce the risk.
· Homeowners need to adopt measures to protect their property from wildfire – Thousands of wildfires occur annually in Michigan causing the loss of hundreds of homes and buildings. Owners can reduce the chances of losing structures by applying practices outlined in the National Firewise Communities program.
· Northern Michigan cottage owners can protect their property from wildfire damage – Property owners should take time to survey their buildings and grounds to make them more wildfire resistant.
· Seven important features of a Firewise home – The Firewise Communities Program provides helpful checklists for Firewise landscaping and construction. Firewise also offers useful tips to prepare your home and protect your family and pets from wildfire.
· Firewise program helps save lives and reduce property loss – Michigan State University Extension’s Michigan Firewise Communities Project is part of a national effort to educate homeowners and local officials about the risk of wildfires and steps they can take to protect lives and property.
· Firewise resources help prepare Michigan residents for spring wildfire season – Michigan residents urged to prepare themselves for the spring wildfire season as most Michigan wildfires occur from March to May.
· Climate change may be putting your home at risk – Warming temperature patterns driven by climate change will grow wildfire risks dramatically.
