Who We Are

Michigan Sea Grant is a joint program of University of Michigan and Michigan State University. It is part of the National Sea Grant College Program, a network of 30 university-based programs in coastal states across the country.

We provide educational information and technical assistance to residents, businesses, government agencies and non-government organizations on managing resources, sustainable economic development, and understanding the Lake Michigan and Great Lakes ecosystems.

Invasive Species in Michigan

Aquatic Invasive Species

Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) are plants, animals and microscopic organisms that have caused serious problems in aquatic ecosystems outside of their native range. These species threaten the biodiversity and function of the Great Lakes ecosystem. Michigan Sea Grant supports research, outreach and education to prevent new introductions of AIS into the Great Lakes and control the spread of established AIS populations.
