SUBJECT: UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION
 
POLICY: MSUE maintains a specific procedure to be observed by an immediate supervisor in handling the separation or layoff of a Michigan State University Extension employee relative to unemployment compensation
 
APPLIES TO: MSUE provost-appointed academic staff and non-academic staff
 
PROCEDURES:
 
  1. The superior is accountable to see that the employee understands that MSU is the employer and the University Unemployment Compensation Office is the proper recipient of any and all Michigan Employment Security Commission (MESC) inquiries. If a county or state Extension office receives any MESC correspondence, the document should be forwarded immediately to:

  3. Any separated or laid off employee whose salary is paid by MSU should be instructed that MSU is the employer and given the above address; any separated or laid off employee with a portion of salary paid by MSU and a portion paid by the county should be given the same information and instructed to inform the MESC that the county is also the employer; any separated or laid off employee whose entire salary is paid by the county should be instructed to inform the MESC that the county is the employer.
