SUBJECT: A Masters Degree Is the Minimum Requirement for MSU Extension Academic Staff
 
POLICY: A Masters Degree, in a relevant area of study, is the minimum requirement for MSU Extension academic staff employed on or after October 1, 2006. The only exception to this policy is the Conservation Associate position within Michigan Natural Features Inventory.
 
APPLIES TO: MSUE provost-appointed academic staff
   
PROVISIONS/ RESTRICTIONS:
  • All new hires in MSUE academic positions are required to have at least a Masters Degree.
  • Attainment of a Masters Degree is not a condition for retaining MSUE employment for academic staff employed before October 1, 2006.
  • Academic staff employed before October 1, 2006 who do not have a Master’s Degree may continue in a current position and, consistent with existing policy and practices, are eligible for other positions of like responsibilities or lesser responsibilities.
  • MSUE staff members who do not have a Master’s Degree, are not eligible for promotion beyond Step II status unless they complete a Master’s Degree and will not be considered for promotion or employment into a position of higher responsibility/job title.
  • The Conservation Associate position within Michigan Natural Features Inventory is exempt from the requirement of a Masters Degree. The Bachelor Degree remains the minimum degree requirement for the Conservation Associate position.
  • Consistent within Extension, promotion to positions of greater responsibility will require attainment of a relevant Master’s Degree.
