SUBJECT: REPORTING SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE
 
POLICY: Michigan State University Extension employees have a moral, though not legal, responsibility to report suspected child abuse or neglect.
 
APPLIES TO: MSUE staff members.
 
PROVISIONS/RESTRICTIONS:
 
  1. While Michigan’s Child Protection statute legally obligates certain public employees to report suspected child abuse or neglect, MSUE employees are not subject to the law.

  2. Although not legally obligated to report suspected child abuse or neglect, MSUE feels that its employees are morally obligated to report as if legally obligated.

  3. MSUE staff are not subject to criminal penalty for not reporting as those who are covered by the law.
 
PROCEDURES:
 
Report suspected child abuse or neglect to the appropriate state agency.
