MSUE Administrative Handbook: Human Resources
  
SUBJECT: BENEFITS
 
POLICY: MSU provides MSUE employees with a complete set of benefits; additionally MSUE employees under federal appointment are eligible for a federal life insurance program and a federal retirement program (Civil Service Retirement System)
 
APPLIES TO: MSU benefits - all MSUE employees with at least a nine month appointment at 50% time; federal benefits - MSUE academic employees under federal appointment.
 
PROVISIONS/RESTRICTIONS:
 
  1. Information regarding eligibility for and content of MSU benefits is available from the MSU Benefits Office (located at http://www.hr.msu.edu/benefits/index.htm).

  2. Information regarding federal benefits is available from the MSUE Human Resources Office. Applicable only to MSUE academic employees eligible to participate in the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) may quality for a federal retirement.
 
PROCEDURES:
 
  1. MSU benefits - an employee must sign up during the first 60 days of employment or during an open enrollment period.

  2. Regular employees age 35 or older are required to participate in the Base Retirement Plan after completing the specified number of service months according to one’s respective job category  (reference MSU Retirement Plans)

  3. Information regarding federal appointment is available from MSUE Human Resources.
