Blackleg and Soft Rot of Potatoes

Blackleg and soft rot are caused by related subspecies of the bacterium Erwinia carotovora, and are found wherever potatoes are grown. The subspecies that causes blackleg generally only affects potatoes, but has been reported in the sunflower. The bacterium that causes soft rot has a much wider host range and will cause the disease on all fleshy vegetables. Archive copy of bulletin, do not use for current recommendations.
